Instructions:
Prepare:
Preheat oven to 400°F and grease a sheet pan.
Combine dry ingredients:
In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and cocoa powder.
Melt chocolate mixture:
In a saucepan, melt butter, shortening, and chocolate over medium heat.
Combine wet and dry ingredients:
Add melted chocolate mixture to dry ingredients and whisk. Add buttermilk, baking soda, salt, eggs, and vanilla.
Bake:
Pour batter onto prepared pan and bake for 20-22 minutes. Let cool.
Make frosting:
In a saucepan, combine evaporated milk, egg yolks, butter, sugars, and cook over medium heat until thickened.
Add toppings:
Stir in coconut, pecans, and vanilla. Let frosting cool slightly.
Frost and chill:
Spread frosting over cooled cake. Chill for 1-2 hours before serving.
