Sarcopenia: Causes of Muscle Loss and Solutions

If muscles tend to gradually loosen up over the age of 30 ( yes, already! ), the process accelerates especially around 60. At issue? A cocktail of factors that often accumulate:

Time simply passes…
As we age, some hormones that are beneficial to muscles (such as IGF-1 or growth hormone) decline. Muscle recovery slows, nutrient absorption becomes less efficient… in short, the body slows down.

Not very “muscle-friendly” habits
Skipping meals, gorging on protein, not moving enough, or sitting or inactive too often: these are all small habits that weaken muscles. Inactivity is also the number one risk factor. And let’s not forget vitamin D deficiency, very common in France, which also affects tone.

Some silent diseases
Diabetes, thyroid disorders, chronic inflammation, or neurodegenerative diseases can increase muscle loss, sometimes without immediate signs.
