*Step-by-step preparation:*
Pour the liter of water into a pot and bring it to a boil over medium heat.
Once the water is at a rolling boil, turn the heat off completely.
Immediately add the dried hibiscus flowers to the hot water.
Cover the pot and let the mixture steep (infuse) for 10 to 15 minutes. You’ll notice the water turns a deep red color almost instantly.
Strain the infusion through a sieve to remove the flowers and pour the liquid into a glass pitcher.
Add the fresh lemon juice and stir well. You can drink it hot like a comforting stomach tea, or add ice to enjoy it as an extremely refreshing drink.
*How to drink it and routine:* This infusion is very versatile. You can drink 1 to 2 glasses per day. If you want to take advantage of its digestive effect, drink it warm after your main meal. If you’re looking to cool down and reduce inflammation throughout the day, drink it well chilled mid-morning or in the afternoon as an excellent substitute for commercial sugary sodas.
*Important precautions:* Because hibiscus flower is a very effective natural hypotensive and vasodilator, people who have low blood pressure (hypotension) should consume it in extreme moderation, since it could cause dizziness, weakness, or fainting by lowering their blood pressure even more. Likewise, if you suffer from severe gastritis or active stomach ulcers, the natural acidity of hibiscus and lemon could irritate you if you drink it on a completely empty stomach. Finally, pregnant women, especially during the first trimester, should avoid consuming hibiscus tea in concentrated doses, since studies suggest it may stimulate pelvic blood flow.
